All About Hair Removal Methods – the Good, the Bad, & the Expensive

How do you remove unwanted body hair? What are the hair removal methods available to us today? There are several hair removal methods that you can try – but it’s important to be aware of their pros and cons.

Shaving

Shaving with a razor is one of the most common hair removal methods used by people today. Shaving cuts off your hair at the skin surface, so it will be smooth for a short time before it starts to grow again. When you cut off the hair with a razor, the tip of the hair becomes blunt rather than tapered, so it feels rougher. Some people get ingrown hair after shaving. Shaving is one of those hair removal methods that you need to do on a daily basis to rid your body of unwanted hair.

Plucking: Tweezers, Hot Wax, Sugar Wax

Plucking out your hair is as painful as it sounds, but its also one of the most popular hair removal methods. It’s effective, since hair is pulled out of the follicle and thus it takes some time for the hair to grow back. It can take up to several weeks for some people.

Tweezers are usually used for small areas, such as the eyebrows. It’s one of the most time consuming hair removal methods. Hot wax is heated and then applied over the skin and the hair. Once hair is sticking to the wax, the wax is then pulled off quickly (and painfully). Sugar wax works in the same way, except that no heat is needed. Some people prefer other hair removal methods over waxing because it can cause skin irritation and ingrown hair.

Depilatory Cream

A depilatory cream is applied to your skin and the chemical in it, called thioglycolate, melts away the hair on the skin by breaking up the chemical bonds that hold hair and skin cells together. Some people experience allergic reactions or skin irritation when using depilatory creams. Also, depilatory creams have a very strong smell that’s a turn off for some people, who prefer other hair removal methods.

Electrolysis

Electrolysis is the only permanent method out of all the hair removal methods, but it is a lengthy and painful procedure.  A thin needle is inserted into the hair follicle and then an electric current is released to the root of the hair. This current burns the hair root, causing damage. Every hair follicle must be treated individually and repeatedly. Some people experience scarring, infection, or pigment variations in treated areas (darker skin or lighter skin than the rest of the skin on the body).

Laser Treatments

One of the most painful hair removal methods, laser treatments are very expensive and not even permanent. It can cost you thousands of dollars. You have to get laser treatments at a doctor’s office and after repeated treatments, the regrowth of new hair on your body will be slowed down. It works by sending powerful beams of light that targets melanin, which is the dark brown to black pigment in hair or the skin. Therefore, if you have dark hair and light skin, laser treatments will probably work better for you. If you have light hair or dark skin, laser treatments might not work for you.

New Technology/Methods

These are the most well-known hair removal methods today, but everyday, new technology is being invented and changing the way we remove our hair. The more we know how hair grows, the better these inventions become. One such new invention is called the No No Hair Removal, which is a special device that uses heat technology to weaken the hair shaft, so hair grows back slower and finer. Since No No Hair Removal is painless, effective, and reasonably priced, more and more people these days are abandoning their traditional hair removal methods for this newest invention on the market today.
